The Allure of Sangria
Sangria is a wine-based punch traditionally from Spain, usually incorporating a blend of red or white wine, fresh fruits, a touch of sweetness, and sometimes spirits for that extra kick. Our patriotic version adds a thematic twist to this beloved drink by using fruits that match the colours of the American flag: red, white, and blue. It's a feast for the eyes and the palate!
Ingredients
- 750 ml white wine (a bottle of crisp and fruity white wine, like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio)
- 120 ml elderflower liqueur for a floral note
- 240 ml lemonade for sweetness and tang (you can substitute soda water if you prefer less sweetness)
- 60 ml brandy for extra depth (optional, but recommended)
- 100g strawberries, sliced
- 100g raspberries
- 100g blueberries
- 100g apples chopped into star shapes (use a small star-shaped cookie cutter for maximum effect)
- A handful of fresh mint leaves
- Ice cubes
Instructions
1. Prepare the Fruits: Start by slicing the strawberries, chopping the apples into star shapes, and gathering your raspberries and blueberries. Place the chopped and sliced fruits into a large pitcher or punch bowl.
2. Combine the Liquids: Pour the white wine, elderflower liqueur, lemonade, and brandy over the fruits in the pitcher. Stir gently to combine the ingredients well.
3. Infuse Flavour: Let the fruit and wine mixture sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour. This allows the fruits to release their flavours and mingle with the liquor, creating a harmonious blend.
4. Add Fresh Elements: Just before serving, add a handful of fresh mint leaves and ice cubes to the pitcher. Stir again gently.
5. Serve: Pour the sangria into glasses, making sure each glass gets a nice assortment of the red, white, and blue fruits. You can add a few extra mint leaves or a lemon wedge on the rim for an elegant touch.
Tips for the Perfect Sangria
1. Prepping in Advance: If you're preparing for a party, you can make this sangria a day ahead to give the flavours even more time to meld together – just add the mint and ice when ready to serve.
2. Fruit Variations: While strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and apples are recommended, feel free to get creative! Blackberries, cherries, or even peaches can add delightful flavours.
3. Mocktail Version: For a non-alcoholic version, swap the wine and elderflower liqueur with white grape juice and elderflower cordial, and use non-alcoholic brandy or a splash of apple juice.
Nothing quite enhances a summer gathering like a pitcher of colourful, flavourful sangria. Not only will the Red, White, and Blue Sangria delight your guests with its delicious taste and visual appeal, but it’s also an effortless way to add a touch of patriotic cheer to your festivities. Cheers to a summer full of joy, laughter, and lots of sangria!
